We really have enjoyed the benefits of a paleo diet for our own health and wellness, and we felt it was only fair to share the love with our dog, Mason, as well.  He does eat a real-food, gluten-free dog food, but we have had mixed success with dog treats.

Leave it to my Mom to come up with a cool, paleo-friendly dog treat recipe.  She also hit a home run with her mushroom soup.  Another fun fact is that she loves crafting, and makes a lot of the napkins and place settings for our photo shoots.  You can check out her stuff on her Etsy site.

dough ready to be rolled and cut

Ingredients
3 Tbsp bacon fat
3 Tbsp almont butter
2 large pastured eggs
3 Tbsp fresh chopped zucchini
3 Tbsp finely chopped cooked bacon, crispy
2 1/3 C tapioca flour, divided 2 C and 1/3 C

Method

finely diced zucchini

Use a jullianne peeler and then finely chop zucchini and set aside.

wet ingredients

In a medium bowl with hand mixer cream together bacon fat, peanut butter and eggs, about 2 min at medium speed.

zucchini and bacon added to batter

Mix in zucchini and bacon on low speed.

mixing tapioca flour to batter

Slowly mix in 2 cups of tapioca flour, mixing until dough becomes stiff and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.

kneading the dough

Knead dough on floured board 8-10 times, and divide into two balls.

cutting out the dog biscuits

Place in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.  Preheat oven to 350ºF and line cookie sheets with parchment paper.

Roll dough out to 1/4″ thickness, and cut out shapes (we happened to also have dog bone cutters).

baked dog biscuits treats

Bake for 20-25 minutes, and allow to cool.  These biscuits do not brown.

final dog treats easy paleo

These have been popular with several different dogs (and possibly one of us, although I’m not saying who), and store well for up to 6 weeks in a sealed container.

  1. The info that I read says that almonds are good for dogs-in small amounts of course. Anyway, just want to say that these are great biscuits. Thanks for the recipe. I made a double batch and mailed them out to all of the family dogs for Christmas, and fed them to my 3 too. Ready to make another batch. Great fun. I am going to try a couple more of your recipes right away. I can’ wait and neither can my husband.
