Paleo Takeout. This may seem like an oxymoron, but I’m really excited to say decidedly it is not. Heather and I have gone almost 7 months without ordering in takeout Chinese or pizza, and this book is our favorite new tool in the toolbox to keep that habit an old one. With recipes ranging from pizza, to chicken nuggets, to miso soup, to gyros, this cookbook has all of the recipes you wish would have been “made paleo” with dozens more you’ve likely never tried. We’ve gotten permission to share one example with you below, and you can even enter to win a copy!

We met Russ almost 3 years ago at a paleo meet up hosted by Matt and Stacy, and ever since I’ve been impressed by his focus on historically significant dishes (see his blog and first cookbook, The Ancestral Table, and his ability to take amazing photos. He’s been a good friend and fellow blogger, and we couldn’t be happier to share with you his second print book. Once upon a time, this was going to be an ebook, like his Safe Starch Cookbook; but he did such an awesome job with what he was working on, it got promoted to full-fledged print book! You’ll soon see why.

Beyond the recipes, Russ does an amazing job of outlining the different shades of real food eating, including paleo, primal, Weston A. Price, and the Perfect Health Diet. These diets have a lot more in common than not. For those new to paleo, this is a great primer on the different ways people think about ancestral eating, or more importantly, eating real food. He also goes into pretty great detail about different grey area foods, like rice and white potatoes. These once highly controversial foods are becoming more and more common as we learn more from science and experimentation. His outline is a helpful way to think about these foods, as well as how to navigate your eating habits in a much more palatable way than any pyramid or plate has done before.

Long story short, this is another champion book from The Domestic Man. Below is a recipe we tested early on in the process of Paleo Takeout that we absolutely loved. Check it out, and scroll to the bottom to see how you can win a copy for yourself!



Burrito Bowl Date Night

  • Servings: 4 (two couples)
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

2 cloves garlic
1/4 C olive oil
1 Tbsp chipotle chili powder
1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
juice of 1/2 lime (1 tbsp)
2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp dried oregano
2 to 3 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs

pico de gallo (makes 2 C)
1 large ripe tomato, seeds removed, diced
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1/2 small onion, diced
1/4 C chopped fresh cilantro juice of 1/2 lime (1 tbsp)

cilantro rice
2 C Basic Steamed Rice (page 286) or Cauliflower Rice (page 288)
2 tsp avocado oil
juice of 1/2 lime (1 tbsp)
1 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp sea salt
1/4 C chopped fresh cilantro

for serving
1 head romaine lettuce, shredded
1 batch No-Fuss Guac (page 282)
sour cream (optional)
cheese (optional)


1. Place the garlic, olive oil, chipotle chili powder, vinegar, lime juice, salt, pepper, paprika, and oregano in a blender and blend until smooth. Combine with the chicken in a resealable plastic bag; mar- inate for at least 30 minutes, overnight preferred.

2. Make the Pico de Gallo: Salt the diced tomato; leave in a colan- der to drain for 20 minutes. Combine the drained tomatoes with the remaining ingredients and set aside.

3. Grill the chicken over direct medium-high heat until it reaches an internal temperature of 155°F, about 10 minutes, flipping half- way through. Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes, then chop it into bite-sized chunks.

4. Make the Cilantro Rice: Place the cooked rice in a big bowl. Mix in the oil. Add the lime and lemon juices and salt, stirring together. Finally, stir in the cilantro. Taste and add more salt or lime juice if you like.

5. Serve the burrito bowls any way you see fit. At my house, we like rice, then lettuce, then chicken, then pico, then guac.
