I hope everyone is enjoying a bountiful start to their 2014. We are doing the same, and are refocusing our efforts on healthful eating to kick the new year off with some positive momentum. If your holiday season was anything like ours, it was filled with positive and negative stressors, and maybe some (or a lot of) generosity with our 80/20 balance. In the past, we’ve done a number of different diet “resets” with challenges of various lengths. We appreciate their variety, as each has its own unique benefits. This time around, we’re going with the 21 Day Sugar Detox by Diane Sanfilippo, as one of our biggest vices over the holiday season has been indulging in sugar and carbohydrate rich foods/drinks. If you’re interested and want to learn more, definitely check out the details over at Diane’s website Balanced Bites. She also has a podcast, so there are many ways to interact with her and her knowledge.
During the past few months, we were fairly resolute with our 2 times a week high-volume kettle bell workouts as well as being as active as possible throughout the day (I averaged 4.5 miles a day of walking). While that was still on track, I fell back into old habits to deal with stress, and through junk calories, both liquid and solid, I put on a good deal of weight. Part of this was muscle from the kettle bell regimen, but a large part of it is not. As of January 2, I was up about 20 pounds from my preferred weight of 165, and my waist is up from a 31-32″ to a 34.5″. I hadn’t weighed myself in a while because I a) didn’t want to know the number, and b) feel that too much weight (pun intended) is put on the number on the scale rather than how we look, feel, and perform.
All that being said, I am resolute in keeping honest these next 21 days (technically 25, I started early). To help myself, and share with all of you, I am going to be posting a weekly selection of my menu for each week, as well as a quick update on my overall mood/feeling. Additionally, I’ll be having fun sharing meals and other tidbits throughout each day through our various social media accounts, namely Twitter, Instagram, and Google+.
Ok, so enough spouting off, here’s a selection of the menu for week 1:
Breakfast:
Deep Dish Breakfast Casserole
With 10 eggs and a full pound of sugar-free pork sausage, I expect this will last the first week. I am not a big breakfast person, so I will likely instead have bulletproof coffee (black coffee with added fat, I tailor this and use just coconut oil) 2-3 days of the week.
Lunch/Dinner:
Slow-Cooked Pulled Pork (without barbecue sauce)
These meals will be supplemented with some leftovers, like sugar free hot dogs, bison/ground beef burgers, avocado, nuts, smoked salmon, and this week’s upcoming recipe (more on that Wednesday).
If you’re joining this week’s 21 Day Sugar Detox as well, let me know in the comments, or come hang out with us on the various social media outlets we hang out on. Good luck in finding better health in 2014!
Starting tomorrow. ..can’t wait.
