21DSD in 2014: Week 3

We’ve made it to the third and final week of our 21 Day Sugar Detox (21DSD).  It’s been refreshing to return to real food, and I’m feeling better than I have in weeks.  If you’re also on the detox with us this go around, we hope you’re having a similar experience.  Here are some of the things we are cooking this week.

Homemade Mayonnaise

A big part of many recipes we come across or think up call for homemade mayonnaise.  Once upon a time, I would buy it at the store and Heather actually thought it was gross—homemade or not. Now, we both shudder when reading the labels but Heather has come to enjoy our homemade stuff.  This is definitely not the first recipe for homemade mayonnaise out there; but we’ve been playing with this for a few months, and are finally happy enough with the results to share with you.

The best part of this recipe is that it only takes about 10 minutes to make from start to finish.  It will keep for a few weeks, and is a great condiment to have in the house for all kinds of fun recipes.  It’s a perfect binder for crab cakes and a great base for creamy salad dressings, vegetable dips, and more.

Osso Buco

Osso Buco (also known as ossobuco, Italian for “bone with a hole”) is an amazing dish, but can definitely come off as intimidating for the occasional home cook.  While it is often served at fancier restaurants, it is very easy to make at home—and can even be created using one dish!  Osso buco is traditionally made with veal shanks, but in this case we’ve used beef.  Additionally, the original version of this dish does not include any tomato, so it may be adapted for those on an autoimmune paleo protocol.  Interestingly enough, there is a version that includes cinnamon as well.

21DSD in 2014: Week 2

For everyone following along, congratulations on a week into better eating and better health through a 21 Day Sugar Detox.  I for one, feel awesome.  Days 2-3 I had a little bit of a fog from cutting out the excess sugar in my diet, but I quickly pulled through with some fantastic clarity and more balanced energy.  Added bonus: lost a little weight and my pants fit better.  If you didn’t catch my initial post about the 21DSD last week, you can see my post on week one here.

Meyer Lemon Chia Pudding

I’m excited to share with you today this recipe for Meyer lemon chia pudding.  About a year ago, I was walking through a Costco and ran into a gigantic bag of chia seeds and wondered how to use them.  This particular item had come up a few times in podcasts and reading as a seed high in fat, fiber, and protein, but I didn’t know much about it.
